It has been learned that freshman star Sydney Holman has had a season ending injury. In the final moments of the UNC vs Boston College ACC Tournament game Holman went down with in injury. On TV it was not visible but you could clearly see Holman go down in pain. Losing Holman is just another chink in the armor of the defending national champs. The Tar Heels lost senior captain Brittney Coppa to an ACL tear in a preseason game versus Team USA. Kelly Devlin is also out for the season with a torn ACL.
The Tar Heels will likely struggle to find goals with Holman no longer on the field. At the time of her injury Holman lead the team with assists and she was one of the top 3 scorers. This means freshman Carly Reed and Carly Davis are going to have to step up if the Tar Heels hope to make another run at a national championship. The road will be paved for the Tar Heels as they will likely host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
As we progress through the 2014 NCAA tournament I will have updates on the games. My prediction is that UNC will have to count on inexperienced players if they hope to beat Virginia in the second weekend of the NCAA tournament. Virginia has historically given UNC problems so we will see what happens. I seriously doubt either UNC or UVA will have trouble in the first weekend of the tournament.
