At this point in their careers it is hard to argue that Kayla Treanor is better than Maggie Bill. Treanor had 4 goals in the Final Four game loss to Maryland last season as a freshman and has started off red hot this season. In a game in which stats do not count Treanor scored 7 goals and had 2 assists in the Champions Classic game against the UNC Tar Heels. Treanor is good. No. Treanor is amazing but Maggie Bill has the skill set to be even better. By the time all is said and done in both of their collegiate careers they may be known as some of the best young women to every play the game.
Bill was the #2 high school recruit in the nation. For most young women, this would have been enough on their plate. Instead of leaving it at that, Bill walked on to play for the defending national champion UNC women’s soccer program. This is no ordinary women’s soccer program. Coach Anson Dorrance has accumulated 21 national championships as the UNC women’s soccer head coach. Bill showed signs of brilliance in the fall on the soccer field but her true talent is with a lacrosse stick in her hands.
While watching the Team USA vs UNC game last weekend it was quite obvious that two players were just better than everyone else on the field – Kayla Treanor and Maggie Bill. As a college freshmen, Bill was going up against the best players in the world. Many of these players were five and 10 years older than her. Winning draw controls and grabbing ground balls were not an issue for Bill. She scored two goals in 11 seconds to bring the Tar Heels within one goal in the second half.
As a freshman, Treanor has 71 goals and 24 assists for the Syracuse Orange. Maggie Bill will start her collegiate career next Saturday, February 8th against the University of Florida. UNC coach Jenny Levy will be expecting big things from Bill as senior leader Brittney Coppa is out for the season with a torn ACL. It will be fun to watch these two young women grow and compete. Mark this date: Saturday, April 12th. The Tar Heels travel to the Carrier Dome to take on the Orange. Both teams will likely be ranked in the top 5 and possibly the top 3.
