After watching a replay of the Team USA vs UNC women’s lacrosse game on Sunday night it was apparent that Brittney Coppa tore her ACL. As soon as she landed she started screaming and calling out to the sideline. The way she landed and bent her knee sideways was a direct indication of ACL, MCL or PCL strain or tearing. Unfortunately, Coppa will miss the enter 2014 season. The defending national champions will have to look to younger players for leadership.
Seniors Emily Garrity and Abbey Friend will be leaders off the field but Maggie Bill and Sydney Holman will have to pick up the slack on the field. In the second half of the game versus Team USA both Bill and Holman played very well. If the young Tar Heel team can play to the level in which they did in the second half of the Champions Challenge they will be fine against college teams. That said, young teams are still learning their way around the college lacrosse field so it will be interesting to see how this team reacts if Syracuse or Maryland gets a two or three goal lead on them.
The Tar Heels will scrimmage Delaware (10 am) and James Madison (1 pm) at the South of the Border event at Duke University. I will have all the details of these games as I will be at the event.
