At halftime, Team USA was leading 10-5 and the defending national champion Tar Heels had just lost their senior leader Brittney Coppa to a knee injury (details have yet to be disclosed). Most college teams would have folded and accepted defeat to the defending World Cup champions. Instead, a team of mostly freshman and sophomores gutted it out and sent the game into overtime.
Maggie Bill looked outstanding. Maybe outstanding isn’t the word; she was unreal. When she gets the ball it is lights out. She is faster, quicker and more agile than any player on the field. If she gets a head of steam in the open field the Tar Heels are going to score a goal. Bill scored back to back goals to tie the score at 11 with just over 10 minutes to play in the game. She also assisted on a goal by fellow freshman Sydney Holman late in the second half. Freshman Molly Hendricks also had significant playing time in the second half.
It is hard to believe that Aly Messinger is a sophomore and Holman, Hendricks and Bill are all freshman. This is a young team that went toe to toe with the World Cup Champions. The game finished regulation tied at 15 after Aly Messinger beat a double team and scored. The first OT was scoreless. Caileigh Sindall was called for shooting space with less than 10 seconds to go in the game which ended up giving Team USA a free shot on goal. Katie Rowan scored the game winner but it was Kayla Treanor that was the star of the show for Team USA.
Kayla Treanor has been the best player in lacrosse over the last week. Today, she scored 7 goals and had 2 assists. Yes, 7 goals! Yesterday, I mentioned that Sloane Serpe and Margaret Corzel would be challenged to stop the attackers of Team USA, namely Katrina Dowd. They did just that which gave UNC a chance to beat the best team in the world. I fully expect this team to roll the competition at the collegiate level. Syracuse and Maryland have good teams this year but Maryland lost to team USA 16-10 and 19-4. That should give you an indication as to how good this UNC Tar Heels team is. Keep an eye on Maggie Bill and Sydney Holman as they are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.
