Aly Messinger Scores Game Tying Goal, But Not Enough

The UNC Tar Heels gave Team USA all they could handle. Team USA was up 10-5 at halftime and most lacrosse fans expected the game to be a blow out. Instead, the Tar Heels came storming back. Unfortunately, a card ended up giving Team USA a one woman advantage for much of the last five minutes of the game. The Tar Heels found themselves down 15-14 with less than two minutes to go.

Maggie Bill controlled a draw and the ball ended up in Aly Messinger’s stick. Team USA double and even triple teams Messinger. Aly’s skills and speed were apparent when she split the double team, ran around another defender and attacked the goal. She scored to tie the game at 15. This was an emotional moment as most Tar Heels on the attacking side of the field were freshman or sophomores. The goal sent the game into overtime but Team USA prevailed with a late score after a shooting space penalty.

Aly Messinger, Abbey Friend, Maggie Bill and Sydney Holman will be a very tough “crew” to stop for most college teams. I would be shocked if the Tar Heels do not make it back to the championship game in 2014.
