Women’s college lacrosse fans were in for a treat tonight as Syracuse started the season against Jacksonville. This game was available online through SunBelt.tv. I had the opportunity to watch the first half and much of the second half and I have to say that Kayla Treanor was an absolute beast on the field. She finished the first half with 5 goals and 3 assists. She ended the game with 9 total points as she added an assist in the second half. The game was never close as Syracuse was up 16-3 at halftime and cruised to a final of 21-7.
Two names the ACC will have to get used to are Kayla Treanor and Alyssa Murray. Murray finished with 4 goals and 3 assists. During the online broadcast it was Treanor to Murray and Murray to Treanor. These two were, by far and away, the fastest girls on the field. Whenever Syracuse would control the draw they would sprint up the field, dodge a few Jacksonville defenders and score at will. In fact, it only took 15 seconds into the second half for Syracuse to get on the board.
The announcer from Jacksonville mentioned that Syracuse may be the best team in the country and they have the most team speed. I am a little biased but I think the team in Chapel Hill has something to say about that. The Tar Heels and the Orange will battle it out on April 8th in the Carrier Dome. The last time UNC went to the Carrier Dome they lost the game to go to the Final Four. The Tar Heels are the preseason #1 in women’s lacrosse and they will play the US National Team on Sunday. That game will be available for replay on ESPNU at midnight on Monday morning.
You can bet I will be watching that game as I want to see what the freshman class can do for the Tar Heels. I am expecting to see some huge things out of Maggie Bill but there are other freshman that could make a mark for the Tar Heels. I really have no idea how all the talent is going to get playing time. Coach Jenny Levy is going to be able to sub quite a bit as the Tar Heels are absolutely stacked this year with four pre season All Americans and those names do not include Aly Messinger, Sammy Jo Tracy, Caileigh Sindall, Mallory Frysinger, Maggie Bill and Meg Ward.
It is going to be a great year for women’s college lacrosse and Kayla Treanor and Alyssa Murray got it started with a bang. It will be fun to see how Syracuse plays against stiffer competition. Jacksonville will take on the Florida Gators next. Then the Florida Gators will come to Chapel Hill to take on the defending national champions in their home opener.
