On July 13th, 2013 in Oshawa, Canada Team Wales was little to no competition for Team USA. When the final buzzer rang the scoreboard read 19-2 in favor of Team USA. Most felt as if Team USA was too powerful offensively for Team Wales but very few realized just how tight the defense could play. The 19-2 deficit has been the largest of pool play in the 2013 World Cup. This moves Team USA to 2-0. They will take on Team Australia tomorrow, July 14th. The game will start at 3:00 pm est.
The player of the match for Team USA was Katrina Dowd who had four goals and three assists for a total of seven points. Just yesterday Women’s Lacrosse news mentioned Miss Dowd and her prominence as an attacker. If she keeps up her current pace she will break the record for the total number of points scored in a women’s World Cup. That would be a very distinguished honor as Katrina was one of the few collegiate players on the 2009 team and she was just getting her feet wet.
Katrina Dowd played at Northwestern where she lead the Wildcats to four straight national championships. Interestingly, in 2013 she was an assistant coach for the UNC Tar Heels. The Tar Heels faced Northwestern in the Final 4 for a chance to go to the championship game. In what was a shock to many, the UNC Tar Heels steamrolled the Wildcats and went on to beat the Maryland Terrapins to win their first national championship. Many feel as if Katrina Dowd is going to be the next head coach for a major program but only time will tell. She has the skill set to be the most dominant attacker in the world and she is proving that she can coach it to collegiate athletes.
The United States team will take on Team Australia tomorrow in an interesting game as Team Australia has played Team USA very close in the last two World Cups. The game on July 14th will likely the the toughest test for this United States team to date.
